Ion acceleration from laser-driven electrostatic shocks

چکیده
Multi-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations are used to study the generation of electrostatic shocks in plasma and the reflection of background ions to produce high-quality and high-energy ion beams. Electrostatic shocks are driven by the interaction of two plasmas with different density and/or relative drift velocity. The energy and number of ions reflected by the shock increase with increasing density ratio and relative drift velocity between the two interacting plasmas. It is shown that the interaction of intense lasers with tailored near-critical density plasmas allows for the efficient heating of the plasma electrons and steepening of the plasma profile at the critical density interface, leading to the generation of high-velocity shock structures and high-energy ion beams. Our results indicate that high-quality 200 MeV shock-accelerated ion beams required for medical applications may be obtained with current laser systems. Intense laser-driven electrostatic shocks and its acceleration of ions in overdense plasmas
We investigated numerically the formation and propagation of the electrostatic shocks in overdense plasmas irradiated by intense ultrashort laser pulses. The dependence of the initial shock speeds on the parameters of the plasma and the laser is explained by invoking the modified momentum conservation model. The acceleration of ions by the shocks is also discussed.
متن کاملLaser-driven shock acceleration of monoenergetic ion beams.
We show that monoenergetic ion beams can be accelerated by moderate Mach number collisionless, electrostatic shocks propagating in a long scale-length exponentially decaying plasma profile. Strong plasma heating and density steepening produced by an intense laser pulse near the critical density can launch such shocks that propagate in the extended plasma at high velocities. The generation of a ...
متن کاملElectron Acceleration at a Low-mach-number Perpendicular Collisionless Shock
A full particle simulation study is carried out on the electron acceleration at a collisionless, relatively low Alfven Mach number (MA = 5), perpendicular shock. Recent self-consistent hybrid shock simulations have demonstrated that the shock front of perpendicular shocks has a dynamic rippled character along the shock surface of low-Mach-number perpendicular shocks. In this paper, the effect o...

Nowadays, due to the high costs and large dimensions of the conventional proton accelerators, other optimal methods for producing the proton beam have been studied. Using of Laser-driven proton accelerators is one of the important and new methods. In laser-driven ion acceleration, a highly ultra-intense laser pulse interacts with solid density targets and will create a plasma media that will ac...

Collisionless shocks are pervasive in space and astrophysical plasmas and are known to be efficient particle accelerators; however, the microphysics underlying shock formation and particle acceleration is not yet fully understood. The fast progress in laser technology is bringing the study of near-relativistic collisionless shocks into the realm of laboratory plasmas. We use multi-dimensional p...
